About This Program
Purpose
Our PGY1 pharmacy residency program builds upon a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the ASHP educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete our PGY1 residency program will be skilled in patient care, practice management, leadership, and education. PGY1 residents will be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.
Description
The PGY1 residency program at the University of Utah Health is an organized, directed, ASHP-accredited, postgraduate training program in health-system pharmacy practice. Four PGY1 resident positions are available each year for the Acute Care setting. All residents receive comprehensive training with required experiences in acute care, critical care, transitions of care, drug information, pharmacy administration, and antimicrobial stewardship. Residents are free to choose from a wide variety of electives in acute care, ambulatory care, specialty services, and operational areas.
Program Goals
- Residents develop the knowledge and skills needed to provide a high level of clinical service and pharmaceutical care and subsequently be eligible for board certification and/or postgraduate year two (PGY2) residency training.
- Residents train in acute care, critical care, transitions of care, antimicrobial stewardship, drug information, and practice management to become well-rounded practitioners and practice leaders.
- Residents participate in the medication-related care of a diverse, medically complex group of patients.
Highlights of Experience
PGY1 residents at University of Utah Health have flexibility in selecting from many rotation options in a wide variety of practice areas. The experience of each resident may be modified as career plans progress throughout the year. Residents have the opportunity to learn from passionate preceptors and develop patient-centered care plans for a high acuity patient population. Residents are valued members of interdisciplinary rounding teams and participate in a variety of teaching opportunities throughout their clinical rotations and activities at the College of Pharmacy. Residents are supported by dedicated, organized, and personable program leadership in addition to wellness mentors.
Qualifications
Candidates must graduate from an ACPE-accredited pharmacy program with a doctor of pharmacy degree (or equivalent combination of education and clinical experience). Applicants must be eligible for Utah licensure, obtain either a full or a temporary license prior to the first day of residency, and obtain full licensure as a pharmacist in Utah by September 30th of the program year.
Recruitment and Selection
All residency programs at University of Utah Health use the Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS). No paper applications will be accepted. The following information must be submitted by the date specified on the residency application for the applicant to be considered for an onsite interview:
- Completed PhORCAS application
- Curriculum vitae
- Letter of intent
- Supplemental application uploaded into PhORCAS
- College of pharmacy transcripts
- Three letters of recommendation using the PhORCAS standard form with at least 1 letter from a clinical preceptor
Please submit your application through PhORCAS as early as possible! Completed applications in PhORCAS are reviewed, and competitive applicants will be invited to participate in a virtual interview. Interviews will be held on January 28th - 30th, 2025. The program participates in the ASHP Resident Matching Program.

Bio
Kimmy graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and completed a PGY1 and PGY2 in Critical Care from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA. She has worked for University of Utah Health as a cardiovascular and surgical ICU pharmacist and drug information specialist. She is currently a clinical manager for the emergency medicine and acute internal medicine teams. Her favorite part of being at UUH is working with a phenomenal pharmacy team to provide high quality patient care.
In her free time, Kimmy enjoys spending time with her family and pets in the great outdoors, traveling, and jiu jitsu.

Bio
Tamara grew up in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, IL. She received her undergraduate degree in Chemistry from the University of Illinois, Chicago and her Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of California, San Francisco. She completed her PGY1 residency at NorthShore University HealthSystem in Evanston, IL and then made the trek back West to complete her PGY2 in Internal Medicine at the University of Utah Health. She enjoys getting a wide breadth of acute care experience staffing the internal medicine, pulmonary, and cardiology services.
In her free time, Tamara enjoys hiking with her beloved dog Laika, skiing, camping, traveling, and going to concerts.
