Note: This opportunity has been postponed indefinitely due to COVID-19.

  • University of Utah Health includes University Hospital, University Neuropsychiatric Institute, Huntsman Cancer Hospital, 16 retail pharmacies, and 11 community health centers. Currently, there are 105 pharmacists, 36 pharmacy student interns, and 72 pharmacy technicians working within the health system. Shadowing opportunities are available in a number of inpatient and outpatient settings. The university allows for shadowing experiences in 1 or more setting for a maximum of 12 hours total.
  • Completion/documentation of the following is required to shadow pharmacy staff within University of Utah Health: HIPAA certification, Visitor Confidentiality and Non-disclosure Agreement, and Application to Shadow. Participants will not be allowed to shadow pharmacy staff without completion of this documentation.
  • Participants under the age of 18 are required to have parent or legal guardian authorization to shadow. This authorization is included in the Application to Shadow.
  • Participants must sign up on the website for an orientation date/time in order to attend.
  • Please review the Dress Code Policy prior to orientation.
  • Participants must bring documentation of HIPAA certification, Application to Shadow, and Visitor Confidentiality and Non-disclosure Agreement to orientation.
  • The following vaccines or positive immunity screenings are required to be in patient care areas. Appropriate documentation for all requirements must be provided prior to participation in any shadow experience.
    • Two negative tuberculosis (TB) screenings
    • Two MMR vaccinations or positive titer
    • Two varicella vaccinations or positive titer
    • Three hepatitis B vaccinations
    • Tetanus vaccination within past 7 years
    • Influenza vaccination for current season
  • Participants are responsible for arranging shadowing with pharmacy staff following orientation.
