Trazodone (Desyrel, generic) interactions with CYP3A4 inhibitors and carbamazepine

Trazodone (Desyrel, generic) concentrations may substantially increase when given with potent CYP3A4 inhibitors such as ketoconazole, ritonavir, and indinavir. Consider a lower dose of trazodone if it is used concomitantly with CYP3A4 inhibitors.
Carbamazepine may reduce plasma concentrations of trazodone. An increased dose of trazodone may be necessary in this situation.
Bristol-Myers Squibb recently updated their labeling to reflect this information and the FDA also issued a MedWatch warning. Additional information is available at the following links:
