Kathleen Athern, PharmD

Title:  Internal Medicine Specialty Resident

Katie was born in Chicago, Illinois, completed her undergraduate degree at Purdue University, and earned her PharmD at the University of Colorado Denver. She then headed to Texas to pursue her PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston. She is excited to go back to the mountains and continue her training in Internal Medicine with the University of Utah team! Her current areas of interest include academia, hepatology, and anticoagulation.

In her spare time, she enjoys being outdoors, hiking with her dog, and traveling. She is excited to explore beautiful Utah and snowboard in her free time!

Marie Barnicoat, PharmD

Title:  Informatics Specialty Resident

I was raised in Cape Coral, Florida. I earned my BS degree in Psychobiology at Florida Atlantic University and pursued my Doctor of Pharmacy degree at the University of Florida (Go Gators!) Shortly after graduation, I began my PGY-1 residency at Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, Florida. During my residency training I developed a passion for medication safety and informatics. I am delighted to continue my training in pharmacy informatics at the University of Utah.

In my free time I enjoy hiking, drawing/painting and practicing yoga. I am excited to take on skiing and explore Utah’s beautiful national parks!

Title:  Pharmacy Practice Resident (Ambulatory Care)

I was born in California and raised in Eugene, OR and consider myself a University of Oregon fan at heart. I graduated from Oregon State University in 2014 with my Bachelor of Science in Pre-Pharmacy and was happy to attend the Oregon State University, Oregon Health & Science University College of Pharmacy for Doctor of Pharmacy. I look forward to my year ahead as a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Resident and the many ambulatory care opportunities to come. My primary areas of interest are primary care and cardiology.

Outside of pharmacy, I enjoy playing tennis, hiking, movies, country western dancing, and cooking.

Title:  Pharmacy Practice Resident (General Practice)

Breanna is from the suburbs of Kansas City. She completed her undergraduate studies in biology and completed her PharmD at The University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. She is looking forward to continuing her pharmacy training and exploring her professional interests which include solid organ transplant, critical care, and emergency medicine.

In her spare time Breanna enjoys spending time with friends and family, being outdoors, trying new restaurants, and watching live music. She also enjoys attending sporting events and will be cheering on the Kansas City Royals and Kansas Jayhawks basketball from afar this year!

Title:  Pharmacy Practice Resident (Ambulatory Care)

Keaton was born in Logan, Utah, and completed his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry at Utah State University before attending pharmacy school at the University of Utah. He is excited to start his PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency with an emphasis in Ambulatory Care. Aside from ambulatory care, he also has an interest in specialty medications.

Outside of pharmacy, Keaton enjoys spending time with his family, camping, hiking, biking, and just about anything outdoors.

Title:  Pharmacy Practice Resident (General Practice)

Jon grew up in the Salt Lake area and attended Salt Lake Community College prior to earning a PharmD at the Medical University of South Carolina.  Jon is excited to return to Utah PGY-1 resident.  Jon plans to complete a PGY-2 in infectious disease following his PGY-1 year.

Outside of pharmacy Jon enjoys reading non fiction and scifi books, cooking, and eating.  However his favorite thing to do is spend time with his wife and young son. He plans on spending more time hiking and camping now that he is back in Salt Lake City and is looking forward to his year at the University of Utah.

Rachel Freeman, PharmD

Title:  Pharmacy Practice Resident (Ambulatory Care)

Rachael was born near Chicago Illinois, where she also attended the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy. She is looking forward to all the experiences as a PGY1 in Pharmacy Practice with a focus in Ambulatory Care, and hopes to learn more about her current interests in Ambulatory Care and Geriatrics.

Outside of pharmacy, Rachael enjoys spending time with family, especially her two nephews and one niece. She also loves dogs and going for hikes around the Salt Lake City area. She hopes to get to explore more of Utah in the coming months.

Eric Gaskill, PharmD

Title:  Pharmacy Practice Resident (General Practice)

Eric grew up in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, and later lived in Savannah, Georgia before earning a PharmD at the Medical University of South Carolina. He is looking forward to exploring many professional interests in residency including critical care, transplant, and oncology.

Eric most enjoys spending his free time exploring the new areas Utah offers and is excited for all the opportunities for adventure. In addition, he’s a decent cook and a bit of a movie buff.

Amanda Gibson, PharmD

Title:  Infectious Disease Specialty Resident

Amanda is originally from Basking Ridge, New Jersey. She earned a degree in Chemistry from Colgate University in upstate New York and went to pharmacy school at Jefferson College of Pharmacy in Philadelphia. Amanda completed her PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago and is excited to complete an Infectious Diseases PGY-2 at the University of Utah Hospital. Along with infectious diseases, her interests include research, academia and critical care. She is a loyal Philadelphia sports fan and is excited to explore the beautiful state of Utah.

Cassia Griswold, PharmD

Title:  Oncology Specialty Resident

An Arizona native, Cassia completed both her undergraduate and PharmD studies at the University of Arizona. Looking to experience pharmacy practice in a different state, Cassia packed her bags and moved to Seattle to complete her PGY1 at Swedish Medical Center. She has had a longstanding interest in oncology and is both excited and honored to complete her PGY2 training at Huntsman Cancer Institute. Outside of oncology, Cassia's other professional interests include precepting and patient education.

During her free time, Cassia loves to spend time outdoors, especially hiking and biking, and is now looking forward to experiencing all that Salt Lake has to offer - including blundering her way down the ski slopes this winter.

Lisa Hayes, PharmD

Title:  Critical Care Specialty Resident

Lisa is originally from East Tennessee and earned her pharmacy degree from the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy. Go Vols! She then moved to Toledo, Ohio to complete a PGY1 pharmacy practice resident at the University of Toledo Medical Center. She is overjoyed to be joining the University of Utah Hospital and Clinics to continue her pharmacy career as one of the PGY2 residents in Critical Care. In addition to critical care, Lisa’s professional interest include emergency medicine, anticoagulation, and academia.

In her free time, Lisa enjoys traveling, reading, and photography. She is looking forward to exploring the outdoors in Utah and having the opportunity to learn how to ski. Lisa also enjoys finding great local restaurants and hopes to have the chance to find lots of gems in Salt Lake City. She is rooting for the Nashville Predators in the upcoming hockey season. Go Preds!

Title:  Oncology Specialty Resident

Emma completed her PharmD from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. As a true Nebraskan she enjoys watching Husker football, but has also found herself cheering on the Utes since moving to Salt Lake City. She is very passionate about traveling and hopes to continue to explore the world throughout her life, although, more immediately to the beautiful national parks nearby. She also loves to remain healthy and active by practicing yoga, hiking and trying new recipes. After a great PGY1 year at the University of Utah she was fortunate enough to be accepted into the PGY2 oncology program and is excited to begin specializing in the practice of pharmacy.

Title:  Pharmacy Practice Resident (General Practice)

Jennifer was born and raised in Rockville, Maryland before travelling up and down the east coast for her education. She completed her BS in nutrition at Cornell University, and then earned her PharmD from the University of North Carolina. She is excited to complete her PGY1 in Salt Lake City and serving the local community. Her professional include pain management, transitions of care, and academia.

Outside of pharmacy, she enjoys experimenting with recipes, reading, exploring the local food scene, and adventuring in the outdoors via kayaking and ziplining.

Title:  Oncology Specialty Resident

Amanda was born and raised in the Twin Cities metro area. She completed her undergraduate and pharmacy training at the University of Minnesota. She went on to complete a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice residency at Oregon Health and Science University.

Outside of residency, Amanda enjoys baking, exploring the outdoors, binge-watching Netflix, and rooting for the Twins, Timberwolves, and the Wild. She is excited to continue her training in hematology/oncology at Huntsman Cancer Institute.

Todd Larson, PharmD

Title:  Solid Organ Transplant Specialty Resident

Todd was born and raised in Torrance, California. After completing high school he went to beautiful Upper Peninsula of Michigan to attend Northern Michigan University where he obtained his Bachelors of Science in Biochemistry. He then moved to South Carolina and completed his PharmD at the Medical University of South Carolina. He started his pharmacy career as a PGY1 at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY but is excited to be moving back out west.

In his spare time, Todd is an avid sports fan and enjoys watching football (college and pro), soccer, and hockey. He also enjoys trying out new places to eat, reading, and going to concerts.

Title:  Health System Pharmacy Administration Specialty Resident (first of two years)

I was born and raised a Buckeye in Akron, Ohio. After high school, I went on to complete my B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Doctor of Pharmacy at The Ohio State University.

In my spare time, I enjoy spending time outdoors with my husband and our pug. I am an avid sports fan and especially enjoy baseball and football. I have never visited Utah previously and am excited to experience everything it has to offer. I am most looking forward to exploring the national parks and making my first attempt at skiing.

Title:  Health System Pharmacy Administration Specialty Resident (first of two years)

I was born in Sacramento, California, and raised just outside the Twin Cities. I completed my PharmD and MBA at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. My clinical areas of interest include oncology, transplant, and infectious disease. I also enjoy finding ways to improve healthcare delivery and I am excited to explore the administrative side of pharmacy as a first-year Health System Administration resident.

In my spare time, I am an avid runner, cyclist, and triathlete. I am eager to take advantage of Utah’s numerous hiking and biking trails and snowboard in the fresh mountain powder!

Title:  Ambulatory Care Specialty Resident

Heidi Pigott completed her PGY-1 pharmacy practice residency (Ambulatory Care track) here at University of Utah Health. She is excited to continue in the beautiful state of Utah as the PGY-2 Ambulatory Care pharmacy resident. While she enjoys all things family medicine, Heidi is especially interested in geriatrics, women’s and men’s health, and HIV. Heidi is an Ohio native, but is proud of her Duquesne University alumnus status where she completed her Doctor of Pharmacy (go Dukes!). Outside of pharmacy, she enjoys cooking, trying new SLC restaurants, traveling, and going to movies and concerts.

Morgan was born and raised in Hudson, New Hampshire and earned her PharmD from the University of Rhode Island. She completed her PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at University of Utah Health and is excited to continue her training here. Her professional interests include internal medicine, infectious disease, and gastroenterology/hepatology.

In her spare time, Morgan enjoys running, hiking, skiing, and traveling. She is an avid New England sports fan and loves attending sporting events. She is excited to continue exploring all that Utah has to offer!

Tyler grew up in Dubuque, IA. After completing her bachelor's degree at the University of Colorado, she returned to Iowa to complete her PharmD at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. Tyler completed her PGY1 training at the Iowa City VA Health Care System and is looking forward to oncology specialty training at the Huntsman Cancer Institute.

In her free time, Tyler enjoys running with her dog, travel, cooking, and skiing. She is looking forward to exploring all of the national parks and ski resorts in the area.

Sabrina was raised in Boise, Idaho. She attended Idaho State University for both her undergraduate and pharmacy doctorate studies. Growing up in a state without a large medical center, Sabrina quickly learned that University of Utah is where Idaho residents go when they need extra care. She looks forward to caring for patients in the institution that has helped her loved ones. Her goal is to complete a PGY-2 residency after her PGY-1. She is passionate about solid organ transplant and critical care services.

Sabrina enjoys hiking and is excited to further explore the outdoors in Utah. She also likes finding coffee shops and looks forward to continuing her love for photography.

Laura was born and raised in Anchorage, AK. She completed her undergraduate degree in chemistry at Western Washington University. She completed her masters in chemistry and PharmD at the University of Utah. She completed her PGY1 at the University of Utah and is excited to stay on for a second year to focus on critical care and emergency medicine. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, biking, and reading.

Title:  Drug Information Specialty Resident

Anthony grew up in the suburbs of Salt Lake City, and attended pharmacy school at the University of Utah. He completed his PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at University of Utah Health. His general practice interests include ambulatory care, internal medicine, and drug information, with specific clinical interests in gastrointestinal and allergic disorders. He is passionate about leadership, and enjoys serving in the community and in professional organizations. This is his fourth year serving on the Utah Society of Health-System Pharmacists (USHP) Program Committee and in various Section Advisory Groups for the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).

Anthony is a foodie and enjoys exploring local restaurants throughout Salt Lake City. He loves music and independent movies, and loves attending the Sundance Film Festival each year.

Title:  Internal Medicine Specialty Resident

Jennifer grew up in the suburbs of Kansas City, Missouri and earned her PharmD from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Pharmacy. She stayed in Missouri to complete a PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency at University of Missouri Health Care. She is ecstatic to join the Internal Medicine at the U for PGY-2 training. In addition to Internal Medicine, her professional interest include: cardiology, endocrine, and precepting.

Jennifer enjoys hiking, going to concerts, watching football (Go Chiefs!), and traveling. She is excited to check out the local food scene and hopes to improve her snowboarding skills in her free time!
