Payson Ashmead, Pharmacist

Payson Ashmead, PharmD

Title: Health System Pharmacy Administration Specialty Resident (first of two years)

Payson was born and raised in Ogden, Utah. After graduating from Brigham Young University with a BS in Molecular Biology and minors in management and German, he attended the University of Utah and received his PharmD. He is excited to continue pursuing his interests in medication safety, pharmacy operations, and drug policy as a first-year HSPAL resident.

In his free time, he loves spending time with his two sons, Owen (4) and Wes (2), as well as his wife Emily. He is elated to stay in Utah and continue skiing on the "Best Snow on Earth" and cheer on his hometown Utah Jazz.

Brenae Ashton, PharmD

Title:  Pharmacy Practice Resident (General Practice)

Before moving to Utah in high school, I was raised in the small town of Hatch, New Mexico with 9 siblings! I completed my undergraduate studies at Snow College and the University of Utah before earning my PharmD at the University of Utah College of Pharmacy. My clinical interests include Oncology, Cardiology, and Transplant (I love everything!) I am excited to continue my time at the U as a PGY1 resident and look forward to serving the community.

When I'm not working, I enjoy spending time with my dog and cat (Beans and Toast). My husband and I also like to ride motorcycles, snowboard, and binge watch random Netflix shows.

Nathan Bartley, Pharmacist

Nathan Bartley, PharmD

Title:  Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Resident (second of two years)

Nathan is originally from La Crosse, Wisconsin and graduated with a degree in biochemistry and his PharmD from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. His interest areas include pharmacy operations, medication safety, and professional development. He is excited to continue to focus on health-system pharmacy administration and leadership as a PGY2.

In his free time, Nathan enjoys skiing, eating, hiking, and spending time with his dog (Riley).

Brittney Brito, Pharmacist

Brittney Brito, PharmD

Title:  Pharmacy Practice Resident (Ambulatory Care)

Brittney is from the Atlanta, GA area but moved to Utah several years ago to attend Utah State University and pursue a degree in biochemistry. While working in a lab on campus that specialized in biomedical applications of synthetic spider silk protein, she discovered a passion for healthcare. Brittney then attended the University of Utah College of Pharmacy to pursue her career goals. Her areas of interest include ambulatory care, specialty pharmacy, and oncology.

Outside of pharmacy Brittney enjoys hiking, cheering on the Atlanta Braves and Salt Lake Bees, exploring new restaurants, traveling, paddle boarding, cooking/baking, and spending time with her husband, family/friends, and dog (Foxy the Pomeranian)!

Christopher Cahoon, Pharmacist

Christopher Cahoon, PharmD

Title: Oncology Specialty Resident

Christopher was born and raised in Salt lake City, Utah. He completed his Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry with a minor in Chinese Language and Culture at Washington University in St. Louis, his Doctor of Pharmacy at University of Utah, and his PGY-1 pharmacy residency at Mayo Clinic - Rochester. Christopher's journey in oncology began as an interest in a field rapidly evolving in medication complexity, but patient interactions have since cemented it as a passion. His interests are primarily in hematology, but he is excited to explore new domains.

In his free time, Christopher enjoys cooking, visiting coffee shops, exploring wineries, hiking, playing video games, and spending time with family and friends.

Taylor Cairns, PharmD

Title: Solid Organ Transplant Specialty Resident

Taylor was born and raised in Torrance, California. She completed her undergraduate and PharmD coursework at the University of Illinois Chicago. She then moved to Utah to complete her PGY1. Taylor is excited to continue her training as a PGY2 resident in solid organ transplant at the University of Utah Health.

In her free time, Taylor enjoys hiking, reading, playing with her dog, and spending time with friends and family.

Makenzie Daniels, PharmD

Title: Pharmacy Practice Resident (Ambulatory Care)

I am from Brownsville, a very small town in Western Kentucky. I have grown up surrounded by the profession of pharmacy. My parents met at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy where I went on to complete my PharmD curriculum. My primary interests are in ambulatory care and academia. I am very excited to explore my interests and to kickstart my profession at U of U Health!

Throughout my time at UK, I taught cycle and strength-based group fitness classes at the student gyms. In my free time, I enjoy rock-climbing and traveling!

Hayam Giravi, PharmD

Title: Ambulatory Care Specialty Resident

Hayam was born in Kurdistan and raised in Salt Lake City, UT. She completed her undergraduate education at the University of Utah and her Doctor of Pharmacy at the University of Utah College of Pharmacy. Hayam is thrilled to continue her training as a PGY2 Ambulatory Care resident at the University of Utah Health. Her current interests include primary care, drug information, academia, and cardiology.

During her free time, she enjoys indoor cycling, hiking, traveling, watching true crime documentaries, and spending time with family and friends.

Julie Gray, PharmD

Title: Infectious Disease Specialty Resident

Julie was born and raised in De Pere, Wisconsin. She completed her undergraduate coursework and earned her PharmD at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. Julie is thrilled to continue her pharmacy training with a PGY1 pharmacy residency at the University of Utah Health. Her areas of interest are Infectious Diseases and Critical Care.

In her free time, she enjoys outdoor activities, reading, and exploring new restaurants and coffee shops! Julie is looking forward to snowboarding in the winter and exploring Utah's national parks.

Katie Howard, PharmD

Title: Internal Medicine Specialty Resident

Katie is originally from Butler, Missouri – a very small town in Western Missouri. She completed her undergraduate education at Johnson County Community College and earned her PharmD at the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy. She completed her PGY-1 pharmacy residency at LMH Health in Lawrence, Kansas and is thrilled to continue her pharmacy training as a PGY-2 pharmacy resident at the University of Utah Health. Her clinical interests include internal medicine, hepatology, and substance use disorders.

During her free time, you’ll most likely find Katie crocheting with her 3 cats (Winston, Gus, and Oliver)! Katie also enjoys exploring new restaurants and breweries, listening to true crime podcasts, and spending time with family and friends. She is looking forward to Utah’s national parks, hiking trails, and learning how to snowboard and ski!

Deni Hui, PharmD

Title: Pharmacy Practice Resident (General Practice)

Deni was born and raised in Hong Kong, China. She moved to Texas when she was fourteen to continue her education. She received her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and PharmD from the University of Texas at Austin. Her clinical interests include hematology, oncology, and critical care. Deni is thrilled to move to a new state, and she is eager to continue her pharmacy training at the University of Utah as a PGY1 Track A Resident.

During her free time, Deni enjoys trying new restaurants, being outdoors, working out, traveling, and spending time with friends and family. She is extremely excited to be in Utah and she looks forward to exploring the beauty of Utah including all the new hiking trails and also learning how to ski and/or snowboard!

Title: Pharmacy Practice Resident (Ambulatory Care)

Alex was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada. He received a BS in Pharmacology & Toxicology from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, a MS in Pharmacology from Yale University, and his PharmD from Roseman University of Health Sciences in Henderson, Nevada. He is very excited to move to a new state and continue his training as a PGY1 resident at University of Utah Health. His clinical interests include primary care, transitions of care, academia, and science/health literacy.

When not thinking about pharmacy, he likes to play boardgames, attend pub trivia nights, go hiking, and learn new craft hobbies.

Clyde Marquez, Pharmacist

Clyde Marquez, PharmD

Title: Critical Care Specialty Resident

Clyde was born and raised in Union City, New Jersey. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Central Florida while working as a pharmacy technician at Walgreens. He earned his Doctor of Pharmacy at the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, then completed his PGY1 residency here at the U. Since pharmacy school and through his PGY1, he developed his passion for critical care and is excited to continue his training across our intensive care units. His interests include medical, cardiac, and burn intensive care.

Outside of pharmacy, he enjoys cooking, hiking, traveling, photography, as well as spending time with his beautiful wife Bridget, his lab/shepherd mix Bubba, and his two cats Cash and Bowie.

Travis Miller, PharmD

Title: Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Resident (second of two years)

Travis grew up in Council Bluffs, Iowa as the eldest of four children. After graduating high school, he attended Palm Beach Atlantic University where he received his Bachelor of Science in Biology and Medicinal Chemistry. He stayed at Palm Beach Atlantic University to earn his PharmD and MBA degree. Travis is excited to continue his pharmacy training as a PGY1 resident in the HSPAL program at the University of Utah Health. His clinical interests include internal medicine, ambulatory care, and medication safety.

In his free time, Travis enjoys spending time with his wife, trying out new restaurants, going to sporting events, hiking, and hanging out with friends. He looks forward to exploring new hiking trails in the mountains of Utah and learning how to ski.

Chloe was born and raised in Boise, ID. She attended Boise State University (Go Broncos!) and obtained a degree in Mathematics. She moved to Salt Lake City, UT for pharmacy school and graduated from University of Utah College of Pharmacy with her Doctor of Pharmacy. Her areas on interest include Critical Care, Internal Medicine, and Oncology.

Outside of pharmacy Chloe enjoys playing soccer, cooking/baking, and spending time with her soon to be husband and golden retriever (Dash)!

Cameron Nelson, PharmD

Title: Emergency Medicine Specialty Resident

Cameron was born and raised in Rapid City, South Dakota. He competed both pre-pharmacy and pharmacy education at the University of Montana Skagg’s School of Pharmacy. Cameron then went on to complete his PGY-1 at UCHealth Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado. He is very excited to pursue his passion of emergency medicine at the University of Utah Health. His areas of interest include toxicology, trauma, and critical care. 

During his free time, Cameron enjoys brewery hopping, lifting weights, and spending time with his significant other and 2 dogs (Koda and Luci).

Haley (Teuscher) Peterson, PharmD

Title: Oncology Specialty Resident

Haley was born and raised in Long Beach, California. She moved to Utah to attend Utah State University for her undergraduate studies, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry, and minors in American Sign Language and Biology. After Haley's undergraduate training, she came to the University of Utah College of Pharmacy, where she met her husband (who she happened to sit by during orientation). Her interest areas include hematology and BMT.

During Haley's free time, she enjoys crocheting, painting, and weight lifting. Additionally, she has 2 cats - Lilly and Novo - and 1 dog - Mellow.

Erin is from Salt Lake City, Utah. She earned her PharmD at the University of Utah College of Pharmacy and completed her PGY-1 residency at the University of Utah Health. Her professional interests include BMT, hematology, and supportive care but she is excited to learn everything oncology related as a PGY-2 this year.

Outside of work, you will most likely find her with her with her fiancé and small pack of dogs, stand up paddle boarding, gardening, or cooking.

Emi was born and raised in Salt Lake City. She completed her undergraduate and PharmD studies at the University of Utah. Emi is ecstatic about staying on as a PGY-1 Track A pharmacy resident at University of Utah Health. In particular, she looks forward to exploring her current areas of interest in hematology, internal medicine, and rare diseases.

When not at the hospital, you can find Emi enjoying her time with family and friends, running and weight-lifting, and working in pharmacy professional organizations and student-led clinics.

Manisha is from Overland Park, Kansas and graduated with her BS in Pharmaceutical Studies and PharmD from the University of Kansas. Her interests include pharmacy operations, cardiology, and neurology. She is excited to expand her clinical knowledge as well as continuing to grow as a leader.

In her free time, Manisha enjoys playing tennis, attending concerts and trying new restaurants. She is also looking forward to exploring Utah’s nature and learning how to ski!

Matt was born and raised in the Salt Lake City area. He received a Bachelor of Science in Biology with minors in Chemistry and Korean Language and Culture from the University of Utah. After completing his undergraduate studies, he stayed at the University of Utah to earn his PharmD. Following pharmacy school he completed a PGY1 residency at Bozeman Health in Montana. His clinical areas of interest include anything oncology or hematology related.

Outside of work Matt can be found hiking, rock climbing, playing with his dog, or baking.

Abbey received her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Adams State University in Colorado. She returned to her home state and received her PharmD from the University of Utah where she also completed her PGY1. Abbey is thrilled to continue her pharmacy training at the University of Utah! Her clinical interests include primary care, psychiatry, and health equity.
